What is Lesson Study ?

“Derived from the Japanese word jugyokenkyuu, the term ‘lesson study’ was coined by Makoto Yoshida…it can also be translated in reverse as ‘research lesson’, which indicates the level of scrutiny applied to individual lessons.”

Lesson study is the primary form of professional development for Japanese teachers. Its goalis continual improvement of teaching so that children will learn more. Its primary focus is how students think and learn. It differs from other forms of professional development because it takes place in the moment of teaching and learning. Its focus, as described by Jim Stigler and James Hiebert in The Teaching Gap, is teaching not teachers, children working, not children’s work.

The success of a lesson study is measured in teachers’ learning, not in the perfection of a lesson. That better lessons are created is asecondary byproduct of the process but not its primary goal. Groups of teachers work to formulate lessons that are taught, observed, discussed, and defined. Teachers engage in lesson study only a couple of times a year because the process is intense.

In Japan, teachers improve their teaching through “lesson study,” a process in which teachers jointly plan, observe, analyze, and refine actual classroom lessons called “research lessons”. Lesson study is widely credited for the steady improvement of Japanese elementary mathematics and science instruction. Since 1999, lesson study has rapidly emerged in many sites across the United States.
In Lesson Study teachers:
• Think about the long-term goals of education – such as love of learning and respect for others;
• Carefully consider the goals of a particular subject area, unit or lesson (for example, why science is taught, what is important about levers, how to introduce levers);
• Plan classroom “research lessons” that bring to life both specific subject matter goals and long term goals for students; and
• Carefully study how students respond to these lessons – including their learning, engagement, and treatment of each other.

Lesson study involves groups of teachers meeting regularly over a period of time (ranging from several months to a year) to work on the design, implementation, testing, and improvement of one or several “research lessons” (Stigler & Hiebert, 1999). Research lessons are actual classroom lessons, taught to one’s own students, that are (a) focused on a specific teacher-generated problem, goal, or vision of pedagogical practice, (b) carefully planned, usually in collaboration with one or more colleagues, (c) observed by other teachers, (d) recorded for analysis and reflection, and (e) discussed by lesson study group members, other colleagues, administrators, and/or an invited commentator (Lewis & Tsuchida, 1998).

During a three-year investigation of Japanese education, Lewis (2000) found that Japanese teachers were able to successfully shift their approach to teaching science from “teaching as telling” to “teaching for understanding” through intense studying and sharing during lesson study. Japanese teachers believe that time spent studying their lessons will subsequently improve their teaching. Furthermore, they believe that the most effective place to improve their teaching is in the context of a classroom lesson (Stigler & Hiebert, 1999). Japanese teachers consistently credit research lessons as the key to individual, school-wide, and national improvement of teaching (Lewis, 2000).

Learning a foreign language is easier, such as Chinese, when understanding how you learn. The science of learning is based on several theories and include: multiple intelligences, right-brain/left-brain/whole-brain, and brain-based learning. Understanding how you learn new information becomes the keystone to effective study patterns and habits. Many people who attempt to learn a new language give up, primarily because they pick a program that does not fit their learning style. These people unknowingly try to fit their learning style into a program. The following discussion focuses on learning styles, ways of learning, and how to master second language usage.

Multiple Intelligences and Learning Styles

The theory of multiple intelligences, by Howard Gardner (Frames of mind: The theory of multiple intelligences., 1983), provides the foundation for the seven learning styles associated with this theory. They are:

- Verbal – Linguistic: use language and words to understand
- Logical – Mathematical: inductive and deductive reasoning in using numbers abstract patterns to analyze information
- Visual – Spatial: visualize objects/dimensions and create internal images/pictures to understand how something will or might work
- Body – Kinesthetic: control your body’s physical motion
- Musical – Rhythmic: recognize tonal patterns
- Interpersonal: person-to-person communications, relate with others
- Intrapersonal: spiritual, self-reflection, and awareness

Everyone has many styles of learning and one is dominate over all other learning styles. Knowledge of your dominate learning style helps identify which program to select for learning a second language. See the first link at the end of this article to spend a few minutes answering questions to determine your dominate learning style.

Left-Brain, Right-Brain, Whole Brain Learning

Most instruction in educational settings is left-brain oriented, which means a focus on logic and reasoning (Logical – Mathematical learning style). This approach does not emphasize understanding, because traditional education emphasizes rote memorization of facts. Right-brain activities focus on creativity, such as feelings and the arts (Sperry, R.).

A foreign language program needs to focus on a whole-brain approach to support dominate and non-dominate learning styles. This whole-brain approach focuses on comprehension, as learners are encouraged to describe a visual image, draw pictures, use reasoning, and act out situations in which the language is used to understand new language context. This is a very good method for learning new language vocabularies through contextual settings. See the second link at the end of this article to spend a few minutes answering questions to determine if you are left-brain or right-brain dominate.

Brain-Based Learning

According to brain-based learning research (McClean, P.), although each brain is unique, everyone can learn a foreign language such as Chinese. Better foreign language programs take advantage of brain-based research and dominate learning styles to using a whole-brain approach with the following techniques:

- Orchestrated – immersion into learning environments
- Relaxed – elimination or reduction of anxiety and still challenging
- Active – internalization of new knowledge by processing information

A program should not be strictly lecture-based and depend on rote memorization of knowledge. The best programs use many different instructional strategies that fully engage you in the learning process. Based on this brain-based research to support internalization of new knowledge, emersion in cultural and personal experiences with a new language is important to relaxed and active learning. With the wide diversity of people in this country, there are many opportunities to use the new language in an appropriate cultural setting that helps you process and internalize the language.

Mastery Learning of Chinese

Another key to selecting a foreign language program is allowing you all the time you need to learn and master the language. Mastery of learning moves beyond rote memorization of vocabulary to a level that the new language becomes second nature. After reading the different theories of learning you can see that everyone uses different strategies and techniques to learn, even if they do not understand why. Another aspect with knowledge of your learning style is that you do not learn at the same pace as everyone else. The Chinese program we offer supports learning at your own pace and giving you time to master the language. Mastery is attributed to how we learn and the ways we use a new language (Glasser, W.). The following demonstrates level of mastery when Chinese is:

- 70% – Discussed with Others
- 80% – Experienced Personally
- 95% – Taught to Someone Else

Examples of Mastery Learning

An example of 95% mastery is to teach someone else the meaning of yi gong which means all together in Chinese. This is accomplished by having the person take scattered items and place them together while saying the Chinese word. This helps you to internalize and learn as you observe using a whole-brain approach in an orchestrated/active environment. This example uses dominate learning styles that are Logical-Mathematical or Visual-Spatial.

A second example of 95% mastery is to teach someone else the meaning of yi gong by having them follow your actions. This is accomplished by having someone else emulate your motions as you both gather scattered items and bring them together. Again this uses the whole-brain approach in an orchestrated/active environment. This example uses dominate learning styles that are Verbal – Linguistic, Body – Kinesthetic, or Interpersonal.

A third example of 95% mastery is writing a short song that uses yi gong in a pattern or change the words in a musical lyric to include yi gong. Keep the meaning of yi gong in context at all times in the song or lyric. After completing one of these actives, think about how this fits within any of your other actions or situations. This example uses dominate learning styles that are Verbal – Linguistic, Musical – Rhythmic, or Intrapersonal.

As a parent, whether or not you are good in science or if it just has been a really long time since you studied the topic, finding activities to help teach younger children might be difficult. Despite science not being your best subject, the level of difficulty for a girl or boy in the younger elementary school levels is reasonably low and easy for anyone to understand. Learning and doing cool science experiments together can also make it fun for both you and your child.

Some parents have difficulty helping their children with homework if they are not good in the subject, but it is still important to be there in the event that they ask for help. Make homework fun by going over what they learned in class and finding information in their schoolbooks so that you can learn along with them.

Being a parent, you can also help boys and girls realize that learning can be fun and exciting. Doing fun summer projects that are educational as well as recreational are perfect for those summer months when the kids are not in a classroom. Providing science experiments can also show kids that the subject is not hard, but rather interesting and useful in everyday life.

Spend time together with fun experiments like making “Gooey Ooze” for them to play with. Make the ooze by putting cornstarch in a bowl and slowly mixing in water until it becomes thick but manageable like putty. You can also add a few drops of food coloring to make it a bit more playful, and you can also show them how the addition of water can change different items. This is not only a chance for your kids to make a mess, which they love doing, but also to clean it up afterwards together with you. This way you can instill some other household values into the fun.

Take the children to a science center so that you can learn information with them. There are many exhibits and presentations that can help you show your children how things work and why. These exhibits can also help you understand ideas that may have been long forgotten. Children add creativity to almost everything, so going with them on field trips or partaking in science experiments can be even more entertaining.

Because children watch how you behave and react, it is important to encourage interest and curiosity in science. If you don’t seem interested in a subject, why should they? Encouraging them to think that all subjects in school are fun and interesting allows them to strive harder to understand. Try to organize experiments to the interests of the child, since girls might be more hesitant to participate in science activities. Using food or plants in experiments might suit girls better than examining bugs, unless you’re like me, who loved to play with bugs when I was a child. My parents thought it was gross but allowed me to explore my interests anyway.

Plan trips to the park, planetarium, zoo and other educational centers so that both you and your child can have fun while learning. Check out books on science or fun science experiments for children from the local library and set aside time to do these activities with the kids. No matter how young or how old, the idea is still the same: All subjects can be fun and interesting as long as parents encourage that attitude!

Learning a musical instrument is a hobby every individual must possess. And one of the famous instruments all over the world is the Piano. Piano is an instrument which requires the best coordination of your fingers and your brain. It is instrument which can easily express your emotions, whether happy or sad. And to back this, we know a huge number of celebrated pianists who inspire us on all walks of life.

Usually the option everyone seeks to learn a piano is to learn it from a seasoned instructor. I mean, it is the traditional option which has successfully imparted the knowledge from one generation to another. But with the advent of information technology and e-learning, the above mentioned is not the only option in front of learning enthusiasts. Online piano lessons have entered into the market recently and have been very successful as well.

So the basic question which arises is- What is an Online Piano Lessons? Well, it is nothing but learning to play the piano just like you learnt to understand science and math. In the online piano lessons, you get web pages which have written matter which will help you learn the basics of piano playing as well as help you delve deep into the subject. So in the traditional form where your instructor imparts you oral knowledge regarding the instrument, in the online learning format, the very same words are converted into text format and put in front of you.

And now let us move to the main crux of the article i.e. what are the types of online piano lessons? Well, in this case, the options are very simple. The two types of lessons are paid lessons and free lessons. Let us start by looking at the paid piano lessons.

Well, the paid piano lessons, in gist, are the same as described above. You have to make the online instructor a certain payment and then you get access to the loads on study material by entering the relevant username and password. The instructor might even choose to upload a few videos to give you an even better explanation regarding the finer nuances of piano playing. Choosing the right online piano guide is in our hands. While choosing a paid piano lesson, keep a few things in mind. Firstly, ensure that the course has enough emphasis on the basics of piano. Just like a building falls without a proper foundation, in a similar manner, you won’t be able to master the instrument without knowing its basics thoroughly. Also, warrant that your instructor online provided you with a help option. So that when you encounter a problem while learning the piano, you can immediately contact your instructor via email or telephone and get your doubts clarified.

Now, getting to the free lessons! Well there are numerous sites which offer free piano lessons. Half of them are scams. Pure means to loot money! Half of the remaining half are just invitations to become a paid member. After all, there is ‘No Free Lunch’. Even if you are able to find some good piano lessons for free, you won’t be able to get them in a continuous order and will have to search for them all over the internet, sometimes in vain. With the popularity of YouTube, you can get free videos to learn the piano but their authenticity is a big doubt.
